Key Takeaways:

  • Ross Ulbricht, serving a life sentence for founding Silk Road, has renewed hope for clemency after Trump’s recent election victory.
  • Ulbricht’s appeal follows Trump’s campaign pledge to secure his release “on day one” if elected.
  • Silk Road’s founder remains incarcerated in Arizona, seeking support to revisit his case and regain freedom.

Ross Ulbricht, founder of the Silk Road online marketplace, has appealed to President-elect Donald Trump for a commutation of his life sentence without parole.

Convicted in 2015 for charges including money laundering, computer hacking, and conspiracy to traffic narcotics, Ulbricht was sentenced after the FBI dismantled Silk Road in 2013, citing its role in facilitating illegal trade.

Ulbricht, now imprisoned in Tucson, Arizona, shared his hope on the social media platform X, saying Trump’s victory has revived his belief in a “second chance” for freedom.

During Trump’s previous term, efforts by Ulbricht’s supporters to secure his release were unsuccessful, even after Trump’s 2020 election loss.

However, at a recent Libertarian Party National Convention, Trump promised that if re-elected, he would work to ensure Ulbricht’s release “on day one”.

This commitment has bolstered Ulbricht’s optimism, as he sees Trump as his best chance for freedom after nearly a decade behind bars.
